A Posterize  Filter will reduce the number of incoming colors + values to an amount specified by the user.

In the sample below a gradient with 256 colors was reduced to 30, 8 and 4 colors

Original Gradient / Posterize with 30 bands / Posterize with 8 bands / Posterize with 4 bands

The maximum amount of colors to split the incoming colors into

• Desaturate Base

Posterize works on both color and scalar maps.

If you want to desaturate incoming colors before applying the posterize tick this option.
